What the work actually is
You are the legal check on a model. The tasks are usually one of three things:
- Analysing legal material. The micro1 litigation listing asks you to assess evidence, contracts and discovery materials and give a critical analysis. The tax and employment listings describe projects aimed at improving an AI system's legal reasoning and accuracy.
- Grading model answers. You read two or more AI answers to a legal question, score them against a rubric and write a short reason another reviewer can follow. "Cites a rule that does not apply in this jurisdiction" is the kind of note projects want.
- Writing model answers. You write the hard fact pattern or the ideal answer yourself, so the model has a correct example to learn from.
You do not take clients and you do not give legal advice to anyone. For the general picture of how these tasks work, see what an AI trainer does.
What it pays: ranges listed on roles we track
On 26 October 2026, 76 open roles match this guide and 69 of them list an hourly rate in US dollars. The ranges listed on roles we track run from $15 to $400 an hour. Taking the midpoint of each range, half of the roles sit between $95 and $200 an hour, with a median of $120.
These are the ranges written in the postings, not what anyone earned. A wide range usually means pay depends on your practice area, your years of experience or the project. Some postings list only a top rate, and some list no hourly rate at all.
What they screen for
- Degree and bar. The listings ask for a J.D. from an accredited law school and an active law licence in at least one US state. The tax and employment listings say the degree must be from a US school and ask for more than 3 years of practice, preferably in tax or in employment and labour law.
- Location. The tax and employment roles are for US-based lawyers only. Other roles are open more widely, so read the location line on each posting.
- An AI interview. micro1 runs a recorded interview with an AI interviewer, usually 20 to 40 minutes, tailored to the role. Read the micro1 AI interview guide before you start it.
- ID verification. After the interview you verify your identity. See what happens after the interview.
How long it takes to get started
The application steps are quick: the interview is under an hour, and ID checks clear in minutes or, for some documents, up to 72 hours. The wait that matters comes after, because you only get paid work when a project picks you.
The micro1 litigation listing says it typically fills roles within 48 hours and expects selected experts to start their first tasks within 24 to 48 hours of finishing onboarding. That is what the listing says, and it is the best case. Candidate reports are mixed: some start within days, others wait weeks, and some are never matched. It depends on which projects are open for your practice area that month.
The honest downsides
- It is project work and it can end. micro1 says roles continue as long as the client has work. When a project closes, the hours stop.
- Hours vary. Some weeks are full and some are empty. Some roles pay per task, not per hour.
- You are a contractor. No benefits, no paid leave, and you handle your own taxes. See micro1 payments and taxes.
- It does not replace a practice. Plan on it as extra income unless you have seen a steady stream of it for months.
- Check your obligations. Your firm, your employer or your bar may have rules on outside work and on client confidentiality. Do not put client material into any task. That is for you to confirm.
