Who Mercor is

Mercor describes its mission as organizing human intelligence to power the AI economy. Its site names the experts it works with as physicians, lawyers, engineers and consultants, and its research team says it builds expert data around the places where models fail.

The people it places work as independent contractors, project by project. The Mercor page on this site lists its open roles with the rate each one states.

How hiring works

  1. Create a profile and apply to a role on Mercor's work portal.
  2. Take the AI interview. Mercor's talent docs, read October 2026, say it asks role specific questions and that most interviews take about 20 minutes.
  3. Retake it if you need to. You can retake an interview up to three times across the applications linked to it, but a retake resets your application progress. If another application needs the same interview, your existing result carries over.
  4. Apply to more roles. Completed steps carry over to new applications, and a Mercor job page says completing assessments opens more roles to you.

The interview has its own guide: Mercor AI interview: format, retakes and how to prepare. For a side-by-side view with other platforms, see micro1 vs Mercor vs Outlier.

How Mercor pays

  • Contracts are in US dollars.
  • Hourly contractors are paid every Wednesday for the previous work week.
  • Mercor assigns the payment provider by region: Stripe Connect where it supports payouts, Wise elsewhere.
  • Stripe holds your first payout for 7 days.

Rates differ by role. The Mercor pay guide shows what Mercor's listings and a third-party guide give.

Is Mercor a scam?

No. A public project list, published terms and weekly pay through Stripe and Wise are what a scam does not have. Scammers can still use a real name, so apply from Mercor's own site and ignore anyone who writes to you first and asks for money.

The 2026 data breach and the lawsuits

Mercor confirmed a security incident on 31 March 2026. It tied the incident to a supply-chain attack on LiteLLM, an open-source tool, and said it was one of thousands of companies affected. It did not say how many contractors were affected. A hacking group claimed to have stolen 4 TB of data, including candidate profiles and personal information, and Mercor has not confirmed that figure.

By 9 April, TechCrunch reported, citing Business Insider, that five contractors had sued over the exposure of their personal data. Law firms have since announced class actions, including one the firm Hausfeld says it filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California on 21 April 2026. Some complaints go beyond the breach and allege monitoring of contractor activity and use of recorded interviews to train AI. We have not read the complaints, so these are allegations.

What it means for you: an application can involve an ID, a recorded interview and tax details, so share only what a step asks for.

Which countries Mercor pays

Mercor's supported-countries page, read 22 October 2026, lists Nigeria among the countries paid through Stripe Connect. Wise is used for Brazil, Nepal, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Kenya is not on the page. The page says Mercor cannot onboard experts or issue contracts in any location that does not appear on it, and asks people in those places not to begin work. Check your own country on that page before you spend time on an interview.

What workers report on Reddit

On r/mercorai_workers, recent threads are mostly about three things. Some workers are tired of repeating the AI interview: a thread from 5 October 2026 has 29 comments. Others report contracts paused or workers offboarded from a project, with one thread of 64 comments from 29 September and one about a paused contract over long sessions from 18 October. A third thread, from 9 October, says 7 hours were deducted from pay after an offboarding. These are single posts by people who chose to write, not a count of workers, and we cannot check their claims.

Our review grid

Every platform on this site is judged on the same six points. A referral link, a sponsored place or a payment never changes a verdict.

  • Good: the platform's own documents and the public reports we read agree.
  • Mixed: the reports are split, or they differ from the documents.
  • Poor: at least two public sources of different kinds, each dated, describe it as a repeated problem and none contradicts them. With one source, or one kind of source, it stays Mixed.
  • No data: we read nothing that tells.

Reports are single posts and reviews by people who chose to write, not a count of workers. Each line names where it comes from and the day we read it. If you run this platform and a line is wrong or out of date, write to [email protected]: we correct it and put the date of the change.

What to watch out for

  • Read the rate and the weekly hours on each listing. A high hourly range with few hours pays less than it looks.
  • Mercor pays through Stripe or Wise, so check that one of them pays out in your country.
  • As a contractor you handle your own taxes. Check your status in the contract you are offered and how taxes work where you live.
  • Never pay to apply, interview or start a project. The US Federal Trade Commission advises walking away from anyone who asks for an upfront fee for a job.

Should you apply to Mercor?

Yes, if you have expert skills and want project-based work. Read the rate in each listing before you start. To compare, browse the 2900 roles this site lists, with the rate each one states.
