Is micro1 real?

Yes. micro1 has a named CEO, funding rounds reported by TechCrunch and Forbes, and a public job portal that this site reads every day.

On its home page, micro1 calls itself a data lab to train frontier models and evaluate agents. Its expert page says it connects domain experts with projects that help build and improve AI systems. In practice, it recruits professionals (lawyers, doctors, engineers, scientists, writers, generalists and others) and places them on AI training projects for its clients.

  • Founder and CEO: Ali Ansari, according to TechCrunch and micro1's own newsroom.
  • Funding: TechCrunch reported in September 2025 a $35 million Series A at a $500 million valuation, led by 01 Advisors, the firm of former Twitter executives Dick Costolo and Adam Bain.
  • Size: TechCrunch reported in August 2026, citing a source, that micro1's gross annual run rate had reached $500 million. It also said micro1 started as an AI recruiting startup and moved into data labeling.
  • Later rounds: reported by some outlets; TechCrunch calls them unconfirmed.

How hiring works

  1. Apply to an open role in micro1's Opportunities Portal. Each role has a set of skills chosen for the client.
  2. Take the AI interview. An AI recruiter called Zara asks open questions that you answer out loud. micro1 says interviews take 20 to 40 minutes, about 7 minutes per skill, and the session is recorded so its recruiters can review it. You see straight away whether you met the certification criteria.
  3. Get certified. You complete your profile and verify your ID with a third-party provider. IDs in English or Arabic usually clear in minutes; other languages can take up to 72 hours. Then you get a micro1 certificate and join the certified talent pool.
  4. Get selected. Your Talent Dashboard shows where each application stands. "Under review" can take up to 48 hours. "Hiring manager reviewing" means you did well and a person is choosing among candidates, which can take up to 30 days. "Selected" comes with an onboarding email.
  5. Get onboarded. You sign the contract and pass an identity check (KYC) in Deel, do a background check through KarmaCheck, and get access to the project's tools and training.

Skills you certify count for later roles: Zara skips them, and if your results already cover every skill a role needs, the application is marked Fast-Track and the interview is skipped. To prepare, read the micro1 AI interview guide. Each dashboard status is explained in what happens after the interview.

Where micro1 cannot hire

micro1's expert page names 21 countries and regions where it cannot hire, for legal, regulatory and security reasons: Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Macao, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela and Yemen. We read the list on 18 October 2026. Each role also states its own location rule in the posting.

How micro1 pays

micro1 pays in US dollars twice a month, around the 5th and the 20th, through Deel. Its FAQ lists three pay structures, and your contract names the one that applies:

  • Hourly: the hours you track in Hubstaff that the project team approves.
  • Per task: each approved task pays your hourly rate times a "Project Payout Multiple" written in the special clauses of the contract, however long the task took.
  • Flat fee: a fixed amount per approved task. Incomplete or rejected work is not paid.

The rate on a posting is a range; the contract sets yours. Current rates by field are in the guide to micro1 pay rates, and pay dates, withdrawals and tax are in micro1 payments and taxes.

What the contract says

micro1 publishes a plain summary of its expert agreement. The main points:

  • You work as an independent contractor and pay your own taxes, social security, insurance and benefits, with your own equipment.
  • Everything you create for the work belongs to micro1. You assign all rights to it and waive moral rights.
  • Information about the work stays confidential, including the client's name, and that duty continues after the contract ends.
  • For the length of the contract and one year after it, you may not recruit micro1's employees or contractors for yourself.
  • You can end the contract without a reason by giving at least 5 business days' written notice. micro1 can end it at once with written notice.
  • Disputes go to binding arbitration run by JAMS. You give up a jury trial and class actions.
  • A project runs as long as the client has work. If a client cancels it, micro1 says it will try to move you to a similar one.

The candidate terms you accept before the interview are separate: they cover the recording and give micro1 rights to your interview results.

Is micro1 a scam?

No. micro1's pages mention no fee for experts, its practice interview page calls practice "100% free", and its FAQ says any software a task needs is provided at no cost. Scammers do copy the name, so the checks below are worth a minute.

One Glassdoor review says micro1 posts fake jobs to gather sign-ups, and a July 2026 essay on Medium calls its recruiting messages a way to collect candidates' data and questions its Trustpilot reviews. Both are single accounts, and we found no evidence for or against either claim.

What candidates report

The good

On Trustpilot, micro1 had a TrustScore of 4.7 from more than 10,000 reviews when checked, with most reviews at five stars. Reviewers often praise a smooth application, a clear AI interviewer and quick communication from recruiters. A third-party analysis of public Reddit threads (by annotation.academy, a site that sells its own AI training certification) found more accounts of on-time payment than of payment problems.

The bad

The one-star reviews on Trustpilot repeat a few themes:

  • AI interview questions that felt unrelated to the role, or abrupt interruptions.
  • Generic rejections, or "shortlisted" messages that did not turn into a project.
  • Slow or missing replies from support.
  • Problems with ID checks or onboarding.
  • Concerns about unpaid tasks and about how interview recordings are used.

Trustpilot also showed that micro1 had not replied to negative reviews. The Reddit analysis found similar complaints. The most repeated ones were the wait after the interview (often ending in "Not Selected"), projects that pause or end soon after starting, and some roles listed as hourly that turned out to be paid per task.

Our review grid

Every platform on this site is judged on the same six points. A referral link, a sponsored place or a payment never changes a verdict.

  • Good: the platform's own documents and the public reports we read agree.
  • Mixed: the reports are split, or they differ from the documents.
  • Poor: at least two public sources of different kinds, each dated, describe it as a repeated problem and none contradicts them. With one source, or one kind of source, it stays Mixed.
  • No data: we read nothing that tells.

Reports are single posts and reviews by people who chose to write, not a count of workers. Each line names where it comes from and the day we read it. If you run this platform and a line is wrong or out of date, write to [email protected]: we correct it and put the date of the change.

What to watch out for

  • Check the email domain. Official emails come from @micro1.ai, @micro1.io or @micro1.co. Look for lookalikes with extra letters, hyphens or other endings. Gmail, Outlook or other free addresses are a warning sign.
  • Know who micro1 works with. Contracts, identity checks and pay go through Deel (payroll.micro1.ai), background checks through KarmaCheck, time tracking through Hubstaff, and ID problems to [email protected]. A message that sends you to another payment app is not from micro1.
  • Never pay. The US Federal Trade Commission is blunt: do not pay for the promise of a job, and walk away from anyone who wants an upfront fee for training, starter kits or certifications.
  • Keep codes and passwords to yourself. No genuine recruiter needs your one-time login codes, your account password or your bank login. Banks such as Caixa Geral de Depósitos advise never giving personal or bank details in reply to an easy-money job ad.
  • Refuse checks and transfers. The FTC warns about fake checks where you are told to send part of the money back. A real employer will not ask you to move money for them.
  • Ignore chat-app offers. An unsolicited message on WhatsApp or Telegram offering simple tasks (liking videos, rating products) for fast pay is a common scam pattern, not an AI training role.
  • Start from the source. If in doubt, ignore the link in the message, go to micro1.ai yourself and log in there. Questions can go to [email protected], the address listed on micro1's site. If you already shared bank details, contact your bank and the authorities right away.
  • Read the terms before you record. Under the candidate terms, candidates assign micro1 their rights in interview results, which include video, and micro1 may use them to improve its products.
  • Apply to several roles. A certificate makes you eligible, and selection depends on which projects are open. Keep applying to every role that fits while you wait, and keep other platforms going.
  • Read the pay clause. Check whether your contract pays per hour or per task, and what the payout multiple is, before you start. Ask in writing whether any preparation or test task is paid.
  • Plan for variable hours. Projects start and end with client demand, so budget on the 15 to 20 hours micro1 expects and keep a margin for quiet weeks.
