Mindrift vs Appen

Mindrift vs Appen: what work each offers, open roles, listed pay per hour or per unit and who each suits, from this site's daily list of both public job boards.

Last read

Mindrift and Appen hire different people for different work. Mindrift, run by Toloka, recruits specialists such as engineers and physicians to train and check AI models, and its postings state a maximum hourly rate. Appen hires speakers of many languages, smaller ones included, for voice recording, speech collection and transcription, and much of its pay is per unit or per session. Today this site lists 19 open Mindrift roles and 54 Appen roles.

With an engineering or medical background, Mindrift is the one of the two that has roles for you. For language and voice tasks, Appen is. The verdict by type of person is further down.

What the open roles look like today

From this site's daily read of each public job list, Mindrift has 19 open roles, and 19 of them show a rate, always a maximum, from $69 to $100 per hour at most. Its fields are medicine 11, STEM 8, and the countries named most often are United States 19.

Appen has 54 open roles. 11 show an hourly rate, 42 a per-task amount and 1 none. 22 are open from anywhere, and the rest name a place tied to the language. Its roles are labelled languages 54, across 22 languages besides English.

Read these numbers as what each platform shows on its postings. A listed rate is not guaranteed pay, and an open role is not an acceptance.

How the work and the pay work

Mindrift is run on Toloka's platform. Its FAQ says you work as an independent contractor and are paid only for tasks that are completed and accepted. Each task shows a fixed reward before you start, and no hours are guaranteed. Payouts go through Payoneer or Tipalti and are processed on the 5th and the 20th, moved for weekends and holidays (Mindrift FAQ, checked 22 October 2026). Mindrift's blog lists maximums of up to $90 an hour for coding and STEM, $50 for design and $30 for writing, and says all-access projects typically pay under $20 an hour.

Appen is a long-running AI data company that pays remote contractors to record, collect, transcribe and translate speech and language data. Its pay varies a lot by task. Examples from single postings on its Lever board in early October 2026: voice recording at about $0.030 per unit, mobile device data collection at $2 to $5 and up to $17 to $43 per session, a Kansai dialect speaker at $40, a Thai translation role at $25 and a Vietnamese validator at $10.50 per hour. The postings we read do not say how or when Appen pays, so ask before you start.

Getting in

Mindrift has two ways in. All-access tasks can be started right after you register, with no application and no education or experience requirement. Specialised projects ask for a CV, assessments and an identity check, and they usually call for a relevant degree and professional experience. You can apply on Workable or on the Mindrift application page.

Appen ties each role to a language or locale, and the posting names its place. Each posting links to its application on Appen's own Lever board. We found no published test or identity steps for Appen in the postings, so what comes after the application is something to ask about.

What to watch out for

  • Listed rates are what each platform shows, not what anyone earned. Mindrift's figures are ceilings, so pay depends on the tasks you accept.
  • Work out the hourly figure before you start on Appen: a per-unit rate such as $0.030, or a per-session amount, can come to little per hour. The salary field holds per-unit amounts, so read the pay in the posting text.
  • Expect gaps. Mindrift guarantees no hours and says downtime between projects is possible, and Appen's work is short and task-style.
  • Check the country and language rules at the application step, and see that Payoneer or Tipalti works where you live if you choose Mindrift.

Verdict by type of person

  • If you are an engineer or a licensed physician, start with Mindrift. Appen's roles on this list are language and voice work (see the fields row).
  • If you speak a language other than English, including a less common one, look at Appen. Check the languages row for yours.
  • If you want an hourly figure to compare, Mindrift states one on 19 of its 19 postings, though it is a maximum. Appen's per-unit rates, such as cents per recording, are hard to turn into an hourly figure until you have done a few.
  • If you want short tasks to fit around a job, Appen's postings are mostly short, task-style work. Mindrift's are project roles.
