How they differ

  • micro1: role by role applications, a conversational AI interview with its AI recruiter Zara, roles across many professional fields. Each role lists its own rate.
  • Outlier: operated by Scale AI, general onboarding and then project assessments, task based work, no minimum hours.

How each one screens you

micro1: an AI interview with Zara

  1. You apply to a specific role on micro1's jobs portal.
  2. You take a conversational interview with Zara, micro1's AI recruiter, whenever suits you.
  3. micro1 says you get a real time result on whether you meet its certification criteria, and you can request feedback if you do not.

To prepare, read the micro1 AI interview guide.

Outlier: onboarding, then an assessment per project

Outlier's FAQ, read October 2026, says onboarding usually takes 30 to 90 minutes and includes skill screenings and identity verification. To join a specific project, you read its guidelines and complete assessment tasks. See how to pass AI training assessments.

What each one lists for pay

This site keeps a copy of micro1's public job list. On 26 October 2026 it had 269 open roles, and 261 of them listed an hourly rate. Using the middle of each listed range, the median listed hourly rate was $68, and the middle half of roles sat between $50 and $110. Your field matters a lot: see the micro1 pay guide.

Outlier does not list a rate card. It says earnings are based on the hours you contribute, and rates vary by expertise, project complexity and location. You always see the tasking rate before you start a project. See the Outlier pay guide.

How you are paid

  • micro1: pays in US dollars through Deel, twice a month (around the 5th and the 20th), according to micro1's library, read October 2026. See micro1 payments and taxes.
  • Outlier: payments are processed weekly on Tuesdays for work done from the previous Tuesday to Monday (midnight UTC), through PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer.

Outlier's FAQ says you work as an independent contractor or freelancer. Check your status in the contract you are offered, and how taxes apply in your country.

Who each one fits

  • micro1 fits professionals who want to apply to specific, named roles in their field and are comfortable with a spoken AI interview. See AI training jobs by profession.
  • Outlier fits people who prefer task based work with no minimum hours, are willing to pass assessments project by project, and are paid through PayPal, Airtm or ACH.

What to watch out for

  • Keep applying after you pass a screening. micro1 says certification does not guarantee immediate placement, and Outlier says available projects vary and may not match your field.
  • Apply only through each platform's official site, and walk away from anyone who asks you to pay to apply or to get a role.
  • Read the rate, expected hours and contract terms on the listing itself, since they change by role.
  • Checking one of them? Read is micro1 legit? or is Outlier legit?
