Does the advertised rate count hours worked?

It counts what the platform says it counts, and that differs. A job board lists a rate per hour for a role. Some platforms pay by the task instead: Outlier shows the tasking rate before you start a project, and Mindrift shows a fixed reward per task and pays only for tasks that are completed and accepted. Onboarding, assessments and training may not be paid at all. Before you apply, ask which hours or tasks are paid. Our guide to what AI trainers make shows the listed rates by field, and every rate there is what a platform lists, not what anyone was paid.

Are there fixed deadlines, and who pays for corrections?

The platforms we read do not publish one rule. Mindrift says pay is for accepted tasks, so work that is rejected earns nothing. DataAnnotation says low-quality work can cost you access to projects. Beyond that, deadlines and how corrections are handled are set per project, so ask in writing and keep the answer.

How do I get paid, and in which currency?

  • Outlier: weekly, on Tuesdays, by PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer, by its own FAQ.
  • DataAnnotation: by PayPal, with deposits arriving within a few days after you request them, by its own FAQ.
  • Mindrift: by Payoneer or Tipalti, on the 5th and the 20th of the month, moved for weekends and holidays, by its own FAQ.

Check the fees and minimums of the payout method before you count on the money. Reviewers on Trustpilot name withdrawal fees and minimums as a common complaint. None of the three platforms above lists Wise as a payout method.

Which platform should I start with?

We do not rank platforms, and the answer depends on three things you can check. First, your field: generalist roles and expert roles are different pools. Second, your country: some roles are open to any country and some name countries. Third, how you want to be paid. Browse the 2900 open roles, filter by your field and country, and compare what each platform lists. The guide for beginners explains how the platforms differ.

Do I need experience or a degree?

It depends on the project. Mindrift says some of its tasks have no education, experience or skill requirement, while its specialist projects ask for a CV, assessments, an identity check and usually a relevant degree and professional experience. Expert roles on other platforms name the field in the title, such as physician or attorney. Read the role before you apply.

I applied and heard nothing. What now?

Expect waiting. DataAnnotation says approval notices usually come within a few days, and reviewers of several platforms describe weeks with no projects after approval. No platform promises work after you are accepted. Do not apply again from a second account, and do not pay anyone to speed things up. Our guide on not getting tasks covers what you can do.

Someone offered to manage my account or sell me one. Is that safe?

No. Offers to buy, sell or "manage" an account and split the pay put your account and your pay in someone else's hands. The US Federal Trade Commission also advises walking away from anyone who asks for an upfront fee for a job.

Where do these answers come from?

From the FAQ pages of the platforms, read in October 2026, and from the public job lists this site reads every day. We also answer the questions people send us. If yours is not here, write to us.
