What Outlier publishes about pay

Outlier's FAQ answers the pay question in one line: rates vary by expertise, project complexity and location. It adds that you will always see the tasking rate before you start a project. It does not give a typical hourly figure, and it does not say whether a given project pays per task or per hour. Under "How much time should I expect to contribute?" it says earnings are based on the hours you contribute each week.

The only number on Outlier's own pages that this site has found is on the ML/AI Expert page: up to $150/hr, with a Masters requirement. "Up to" describes the best case for one specialist role. It tells you nothing about the typical project.

What you will not find

  • Rates for generalist roles. Outlier does not list them publicly.
  • Rates by country. The FAQ says location affects the rate, and it gives no table.
  • A count of open projects. They are visible only inside an account.

Several blogs and Reddit posts quote specific Outlier hourly figures. This site does not repeat them, because they come from individual workers or sellers of courses and cannot be checked against an Outlier page. If you want a real number, sign up and read the tasking rate on the project itself.

How and when Outlier pays

Outlier documents this in its FAQ.

  • Schedule: payments are processed weekly, on Tuesdays.
  • Pay period: work completed the previous Tuesday through Monday (midnight UTC).
  • Methods: PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer.
  • Status: you work as an independent contractor, not as an employee of Outlier, so taxes and insurance are yours to handle.

Outlier does not list Wise as a payout method.

The guide to micro1 payments and taxes explains what contractor status means in practice. It is written for micro1, and the contractor basics are the same.

How other platforms compare

Platforms that publish their roles give a way to put a figure in context. This site reads the public job lists of the platforms that have one. On 26 October 2026 it held 2,900 open roles, and 1,613 of them listed an hourly rate. The median listed rate (middle of each range) was $50, and half of the rates sat between $24 and $85.

That is a mix of fields and platforms, so use it as background, not as a prediction for Outlier. For platforms with a public list, here are the medians:

PlatformOpen rolesWith a listed rateMedian listed rate
micro1269261$68
xAI1818$40
Meridial757100$22
RWS TrainAI136132$16

The AI Training Pay Index applies the same method to every platform and field. The Outlier page lists what is known about requirements and sign-up.

Listed rate is not the same as earnings

  • Selection: Outlier calls its screening selective, so signing up does not guarantee projects.
  • Hours: Outlier says available projects vary and may not match your field. See why you may get no tasks.
  • Location: rates depend on where you live, and the ID and phone number you give must come from your country of residence.
  • Unpaid time: onboarding takes 30 to 90 minutes by Outlier's own estimate, and project assessments come on top.

Common questions

Does Outlier pay per task or per hour?

Outlier's FAQ does not say. It says earnings are based on the hours you contribute each week and that you see the tasking rate before starting a project. Read it on the project page.

Is the $150 an hour figure realistic?

It is a listed maximum on the ML/AI Expert page, which also lists a Masters requirement. It is not a typical rate for all Outlier roles.

When does Outlier pay?

Weekly, on Tuesdays, for work done from the previous Tuesday to Monday midnight UTC, by PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer.

Why is there no Outlier data on this site?

Outlier has no public job board. Projects sit behind a login, so there is nothing to read without an account.
