Rater roles ask you to judge how relevant and useful search results, ads, map suggestions or social media content are for a given query and location, following long written guidelines. Several postings in this group say there is no formal interview, but that you must pass learning modules and a quality test designed by the client before work starts. Practise thinking in terms of user intent.
Practice questions
These are practice questions written for this site to help you prepare. No platform has said it asks these exact questions.
What is user intent, and why does it matter when rating a search result?
A good answer covers: Intent is what the person is trying to do (know, go, buy, do). A result is only relevant if it serves that intent for that user and location.
Rate this ad for the query 'cheap running shoes near me' and explain.
A good answer covers: Check that the ad matches the product, the price expectation and the local need. Explain which part matches and which does not.
The query is ambiguous. How do you rate results that serve only one meaning?
A good answer covers: Consider the most likely meanings for that locale; a result serving the dominant meaning rates higher than one serving a rare meaning.
How does the user's location change a rating?
A good answer covers: Local queries need local results; a perfect result in another city or country can be useless. Mention language and currency too.
What makes a page low quality even if it is on-topic?
A good answer covers: Thin or copied content, misleading claims, excessive ads, or no clear author or purpose.
How would you rate a map suggestion that is closed or has moved?
A good answer covers: Low, because it fails the user's goal, and flag the data problem if the guideline allows.
How do you stay consistent with other raters?
A good answer covers: Follow the guideline examples closely, re-read sections when unsure, and rely on the guideline over personal taste.
What would you do if you are unsure about a task after reading the guideline?
A good answer covers: Use the project's help channel or skip option if one exists rather than guessing, and note the reason.
Why do companies use human raters for ads and search?
A good answer covers: Human judgements are used to measure and improve how well ranking systems match what people want; raters do not directly change rankings.
What the platforms say about the assessment
In the 9 October 2026 data, roles in this group came from Welo Data (Welocalize), RWS TrainAI, Appen and Meridial. Each platform runs its own process, and steps can differ by role. Below is what each platform's public pages or postings say, followed by lines quoted from current postings in this group.
Welo Data (Welocalize)
- Welo Data's join page lists these steps: apply, create a Welo Works account, take a Language and Cultural Assessment, optional study materials, a qualification exam, then payment setup and agreement.
- Many postings say there is no formal interview and the process is automated. Several mention learning modules and a quality test designed by the client; translation roles may include a translation test.
- Welo Data says it only contacts applicants from @welocalize.com, @weloglobal.com, @hire.lever.co and @welodata.ai addresses and never asks for fees.

Appen
- Appen's postings list requirements (for example age 18 or older, a compatible phone or the Appen Mobile app, a quiet room, and the language set in your profile) but do not name a specific test.
- We could not confirm Appen's screening steps from a public page; treat the posting itself as the guide.

Meridial
- Meridial postings describe the work and requirements but do not describe the screening steps.
- Postings say contractors supply their own secure computer and internet connection, and recording roles add a high-quality microphone and recording setup. Company benefits such as health insurance do not apply.
- We could not confirm Meridial's selection steps from a public page; treat the posting itself as the guide.
